Couple fleeing attack prosecuted over firearms

The Scottish Sun is reporting that a couple who bought guns to protect themselves from thugs in Bulgaria were last night facing criminal charges back home in the UK.

Under the headline "Bulgaria gun pair face jail", David Goodwin reports that pensioners Alan and Sylvia Cantwell could be jailed for at least five years if convicted, the manadatory minimum term for possessing an illegal firearm in the UK.

"The shock threat emerged after the terrified pair contacted Tayside Police to hand in three self-defence weapons, which fire gas pellets, not bullets," according to the newspaper.

Apparently, police later swooped on their daughter's home in Dundee where they've been staying since arriving back in Scotland. Alan, 65, and Sylvia, 63, say they were grilled for three hours at a police station.

The couple had fled Bulgaria after a particularly violent attack in their new home in the countryside near Pleven. The gang battered and robbed them in their new home then returned to try to kill them.

Sylvia said: "After we phoned up to hand in the guns, the CID arrived. They searched the house while our grandkids were here. I felt like a criminal."

A Tayside Police spokesman said: "Our enquiries are continuing."

Visionaerie...
My take on the "gas pellet" guns was that they fire something like pepper spray or something. Not even what most people would consider real guns.

People don't realize how close we are to that here in the U.S. Obama is steering us right into the U.N. and a one world gov. If that happens do you think the rest of the world will have our rights or will we give up most of ours? Including the right to bear arms.Stop Obama on all his socialist ideas even health care, it is all about control.

I'd like to know what the "gas pellets" guns are that they are writing about. If they are airguns or CO2-powered, how would those even qualify as being firearms? I guess maybe the authorities considered them to be "gateway" guns to those which actually use powder. It all shows how vitally important our basic God-given human rights are -- especially when it comes to self-defense!

I'm also a Yank. Looks like the Brit's law and government is the new enemy of the people. When the victim is harassed and treated like a criminal, then it's time to revolt and take charge. We're doing this in the U.S. with the commie Obama Administration and his czars. It could get ugly for them if they don't listen to the people.

Possible mis-reporting here. It doesn't say the couple have actually been charged. What the police will want to know is where they obtained the weapons.

I'm a yank, thank God, living in a rural area of Iowa. Just a few minutes drive from my house is a free, public, outdoor shooting range where I, and any number of other people, can show up and pop away at targets, tin cans, or whatever to our heart's content, with handguns, rifles, shotguns, or whatever. There is very little violent crime in the area. The presence and easy availability of guns causes no crime. Gardening isn't caused by shovels and hoes. Carpentry isn't caused by hammers and saws. Crime is committed by PEOPLE who choose to do so.

Man what a nutty justice system we have in the world today, it's absoluty kafkaesque. No wonder people eventually have enough and support strong arm leaders, especially if they seem to actually use logic.

Just another case of punishing the
victims, which happens every day in
this benighted country of ours.
