Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boiko Borissov called for a common communications strategy on the base stations of the country’s three mobile phone operators.

The announcement was made at a meeting with Andreas Maierhofer, chief executive of MobilTel, the Government’s press office said.

Borissov and Maierhofer discussed public control over the operator’s base stations perched on the high floors of residential buildings and urban lighting poles.

Borissov suggested that the country’s three operators - Mobiltel, Globul and Vivatel - get together in the coming weeks to discuss the matter.

Another topic on the agenda was the reduction of roaming rates laid down in European directives.

Bulgarian mobile phone users are currently charged the highest tariffs across Europe but operators have watered down these claims, saying they have flexible tariffs available.

Globul said that it was open for discussion about base stations, while Vivatel declined to comment.

A representative of the telecommunications association said that Bulgaria had put in place more stringent base station sanitary standards than the rest of Europe but control is slacker.

In June, Sofia municipality decided to create a public registry of all lawful facilities and those out of the list should be removed.
