Martin Petrov set to sign with Tottenham

Manchester City's Martin Petrov (top) scores against Rangers during their friendly  match at Ibrox stadium in Glasgow, Scotland August 5, 2009.

Bulgarian international Martin Petrov's transfer to White Hart Lane appears to be certain, and according to several media reports, he is expected to become a Spurs player by the end of the day on August 31.

Media reports suggest that Spurs have tabled a 3.5 million pounds sterling bid to sign the City winger.  The Londoners had been flirting with the player and were keen on signing him on several previous occasions but in their last bid in 2007, they lost him to City as they could not match the wage-range.

Currently, speculation has it that is paid about 70 000 pounds a week at the Eastlands. As a consequence of the massive reinforcement campaign that went on in the summer, however, Petrov had been relegated in status to a peripheral player, rather than a first team choice.

And during his recent trip to Bulgaria, during the country's friendly with Latvia on August 12, he told Bulgarian media that he expected to leave Manchester City.

"I don't see City depending too much on me this year, at least from what I have seen from the pre-season friendlies so far. No footballer is content with polishing the bench and I am no exception," he said, in an interview for Dnevnik.

Spurs' Harry Redknapp sees Petrov as "providing good width on the left flank" and said that signing him would "give the Spurs manager the option of moving Luka Modric into a more central role," the London Evening Standard has reported .

Reports indicate that Manchester City are willing to sell Petrov but will probably hold out for a higher fee before the window closes on Tuesday.

Spurs were already involved in the transfer market over the weekend by agreeing to sell Kevin-Prince Boateng to Portsmouth for four million pounds sterling. Furthermore, the club is also likely to loan Jamie O'Hara to the struggling Premier League club.

ps. which makes Martin Petrov even more desired by Rednap in the team since Modric will be unavailable.

good article, signed August 31. If you were good journalists (I believe you are), you should have known by now that Luka Modrich is out of the stadiums for months to come - he broke his knee.
