Two teams will represent Bulgaria in the group stages of Uefa's Europa League tournament after CSKA Sofia won a stunning 2:1 win in Moscow against Dynamo Moscow on August 27 2009. This, following the goalless draw a week earlier in Sofia, means that CSKA went through.
After the 0:0 draw in Sofia on August 20 many thought that the team had little chance, especially given its ongoing financial turmoil over the past three years.
This years the team is made up mainly of little-known inexperienced and young Bulgarian players who, according to the Russian media, would be no match forDynamo's stars.
CSKA, however, played one of its best games in Moscow, proving everybody wrong. The Russians scored first with Alexandr Kerzhakov's ruthless header in the 10th minute. But the Bulgarian side quickly recovered and responded just four minutes later through Spas Delev.
From then on CSKA had almost full control of the game with the Russian side exhibiting alarming lapses of concentration. A crucial moment came in the 51st minute when German referee Michael Werner decided not to award the Russians a penalty.
Four minutes later, CSKA's Ivan Ivanov scored, making the final result 2:1 which was enough for the Bulgarian side to go through.
Unfortunately, Litex Lovech who had great chances to advance, failed in the last four minutes of their home game against BATE Borisov from Belarus. Litex had won the first game by 1:0 and needed a 0:0 draw to advance to the group stages of the tournament.
Four minutes before the end of the game in Lovech the result was exactly that with neither of the two teams showing much desire to win. A lapse in concentration by the Litex goalkeeper, however, led to a corner for the visitors who took full advantage of the tired Litex defenders and scored, propelling the game into extra time.
This was where Litex lost the game and quickly conceded three more goals making the final result 4:0 the last of which was an own goal. Hence Litex became the second Bulgaria team to be kicked out of the tournament by BATE Borisov after Levski Sofia failed to win against it last season.
Levski will be the second Bulgarian team in the group stage draw that will take place in Monaco on August 28 2009 at 2pm Bulgarian time.
Levski got the right to take part in the draw after the Bulgarian champions lost their two Uefa's Champions League tournament qualifiers to Hungarian Debrecen earlier this month
Conveniently, Fifa released its updated rankings just ahead of Bulgaria’s crucial qualifiers on September 5 with Montenegro at home and with Italy away on September 9.
The Super Cup – a special game between Poland champion Wisla Krakow and Polish Cup winner Legia Warsaw was to be the first football event scheduled to take place at the venue.
