Jana, I think you are on to something here. My grandfather always said to my mother that our names used to be Bulgarian when he was a child. After the war everybody except those with money (who bought off the authorities) had to change their names to the new -ski. Our surname is Karamarkovska, before it was Karamarkov. I seen your Facebook enquiry and think you are very brave to do this. It is good to find the truth.
By this name change issue, I mean our god damn surnames not this modern name isssue. We all lost something, our proper names and now we want to know why......
Valeri, thanks for that. If you read Mile's concern below you can understand the issue. THere are many Macedonians asking about their roots something ironically started by Gruevski's antiquisation policy, trying to make a continous national narrative from Al.Veliki in 300sBC to the present which is as probable as Gruevski winning a couple of Boxing matches (word is in skopje that he was a sore loser). It began with a few dozen interested Macedonians who wanted to find out more about this name change issue then it grew to a couple of hundred interested people. Now we are receiving thousands [...]
Read the full comment of interested parties who want to learn more about that dreadful period bgun by Tito and worst of all implemented by our own Macedonian authorities. Maybe Valeri our Macedonian authorities were complicit in the forced detention, torture, and killing of many of our Narod which has been kept under lock and key for over half a century now. The truth will prevail. Out with the old and in with the new.........
You are welcome!
I have a library of about 1200 (and growing), history books. Many of them are deep research, but quite a few are more casual stuff...
Valeri - many thanks for this exhaustive and well-researched information. All I can say is "yes" ! (I didn't know about Dachau's earlier venture into history - probably only a few people do.)
Thanks again ! Bolshoye spasibo !
Jana,
A small % of Bulgarian names in Bulgaria do end on "ski" as well, but you are right that names in FYROM were forcefully changed in the after WWII years. One thing that we haven't talked about is the language changes. That started after the 1913 war, initiated by the Serbs, and continued after WWI. There were many Serbian language bits added to the originally Bulgarian language of the Slavs in the FYROM, along with the prosecution of teachers and priests, with the clear goal of erasing the Bulgarian identity of the population.
[...]
Read the full comment Unfortunately, after Tito's break with Stalin, our own Bulgarian Commie authorities did their part to separate us from Bulgarians in FYROM. We too had some language changes, not to mention much propaganda, because in their minds the Iron Curtain actually went through BG - YU border.
Epami,
interesting bit:
as you know in the post WWI years practically every European country had it's own Communist revolution, with the only successful one being in Russia. That said, Germany actually had two major revolts - Berlin and Munich.
The Bavarian Soviet Republic was crushed in April of 1919. Its leaders were Ernst Toller (I am sure the name brings back some bus stop in the East), Eugen Levine and Max Levien.
April 27 the so called "Whites" - German soldiers just back from the front, after the defeat of Germany, attacked Dachau. Dachau was a POW camp long before the NAZIs converted it to a Death Camp, and it was packed with Russian POWs awaiting repatriation, who were actually invited, and accepted joining the Bavarian revolutionary army. .
Dachau became a Communist strong hold.
Anyway, the Whites were repulsed, but the next day they executed some 20 captured Communists.
The Reds retaliated by going around Munich, looking for hostages, mostly people known around town for their anti-Communist views. They took 16 hostages, six of whom were from the racist Thule Society, and shot 10 of them out of hand.
One guy they did try to snatch, was a young corporal just back from the front, stationed at the Munich barracks of the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment, who actually brandished a gun and frightened off the 3 Reds who had come to arrest him, compelling them to look for an easier prey elsewhere.
That guy was Adolf Hitler;)
Isn't history fascinating?
Macedonian surnames first had their suffixes forcefully added in '44-45 period. Koneski also created the first language primer in 45-49 under the wishes of TITO AND cO. wE ARE FOOLING OUSELVES IF WE AS mACEDONIANS THINK OUR SURNAMES ALWAYS HAD A -SKI ON THE END. With the one exception of Sandanski all our founding fathers had the Bulgarian -ov suffix on the end of their names. No-one can rewrite history although Risto Stefov (who has Bulgarian surname) is trying very very hard. So those today who have -ski on the end are all post wwii creations. Mine is Stojanovska but [...]
Read the full comment my grand father told me when he was a child our name was still Stojanov. So please if anyone else has similar info. share it. Lets start getting to the bottom of our real history and see what our roots are made of........
Yes my Prasko friend Bitolski, many before had -ov on the end of their names just ask your mother, uncles, grandparents. But the truth is you Nazis refuse to admit past events. Never will Macedonia become part of another country. But if I had to choose between living with Pigs like you or living with decent people who respect who we are like Buklgarians, Albanians, Greeks, Vlachs, etc., then my Nazi friend I would have to choose the latter. There are those who don't want to recognise who we are but there are those do. To reach a compromise is [...]
Read the full comment easier than your PRase Pm with his Nazi followers admit. You are all skirt lovers chasing the pretty wine boys around just like our PM did in Canada a few days ago. Bitolski, our Macedonian roots differ immensely. Your roots sprang from the post-WW2 Nazi VMRO ideology which only wanted a living for the Middle-upper class. Our roots originate from the Delchevs, Gruevs, & Co., 1893 VMORO whose ideology was for the proletariat (the people) and had you PIGS betraying us to all the death camps. YOu PIGS have stained our copuntry with your filthy habits, lies and now these hallucinative ideas that we are some hoe attached to AL.VELIKI. You MORONS we are SLAVS and NO 10m. Statue is going to change that. How imbecilic are you Bitolski. Just like our confused, narssicistic Diaspora you all hover around our people like vultures ready to betray us. You mORONS want to build another Bulshit church in the Middle of our capital for what just so our leader the biggest faggot our country ever produced can go and get blessed after a day at the office. The Chickens you educated have come home to roost. NAZIs love Nazis it doesn't matter what backgroun they are and you my friend betrayed us to the ustase, italian fascists and later the american fascist under Bush. Today you run our country tomorrow we the Macedonia NAROD will be back and get all of you PRASE out of our neighbourhoods. Sleep tight tonight Bitolski, tomorrow you will wake up eating the crap you spread..........
Valeri - yes, it was the old terminal at Sofia airport that I was referring to. It had a splendid "main hall" in good old Socialist Realist style, by which all airports were designed as railway stations. The main feature of the Main Hall was a mosaic map or air routes covering one entire wall, in which Moscow was the centre of the Universe (I hope they've preserved it - it's a splendid museum artefact of the Soviet period !)
As for Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg - time was when you couldn't move in East [...]
Read the full comment Germany without encountering streets named after one or the other of them !
(Presumably these streets have now been named "Kohlstrasse" or "Gorbaschewgasse". I was receiving our Foreign Office telegrams back in 1989, and the final sweetener for the German Reunification deal was (genuinely) 1 billion cigarettes provided by West Germany to the Soviet Army in East Germany. Not many people know this, but now it can be told....)
Valerie
The rwin name of the football team
Levski-Spartak should i think be ke
pt Levski as you mentioned being
a legendary figure in the revolt
agnaist the Turks (ottoman empire)
and Spartak, the Thracian gladiator Spartacus who lead the
revolt of the slaves which in turn led to the Servile War(Roman Empire)
BTW Arias and Epami,
I was joking, but Spartacus was used extensively by our Commie rulers back in the day. Our premiere football team (still) is called Levski-Spartak which of course is a combination between Levski - one of our national heros in the struggle against the Turks, and Spartak - the leader of the oppressed.
(Spartaks is the Oscan version of the Latin name Spartacus. Oscan was the language of Pompeii before it was colonized by Rome (Sulla), and of course Pompeii, with the adjacent Vesuvius, was the site of his earlier successes.)

Nor were our Commies onto anything original: Post WWI Germany was the site of very strong Communist activities, culminating with the bloody revolt by the so-called Spartacist League - a Jewish Communist organization led by Carl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, arguably the origins for the eventual German popular support for the NAZIs.
Of course that ancient figure of Spartacus, symbolizes ideology and it's almost understandable that Left wing groups would be attracted... attaching your nation's identity to an ancient hero on the other hand would be silly, but of course, no one in their right mind would do that...;))
Epami,
you know better than me. I haven't been in a tram for 20 years at least, but yeah public transport is always good. The taxis aren't that bad. I almost always get picked up, but the few times I've taken a cab, it was very orderly. It depends what terminal you arrive at. The new terminl has a huge taxi area and it's directed by the folks there. I was just in Vienna and used one those, I think it was Sky Europe or something, I forget, and arrived at the old terminal. Little has changed there. [...]

Donski...are we talking about the same Macedonia here. As far as I remember there are still people in Macedonia specially in the eastarn parts wich names finish on "ov".
If someone on this forum is a pig (prase) and a NAZI, that is you amd you moron friends. I think you are for a Macedonia that will one day be part of Bulgaria. That will never happen. Macedonia will be Macedonia and never a part of any other country...nor Serbia nor Greece. We suffer from morons like you thats why we are still in this shit.
Bulgarians, Greeks, and Vlachs, we are all Macedonians. Those who work for the benefit of our land, remain a part of it. Those who try to undermine our Bulgarian, Greek, and Vlach Macedonian backgrounds shall eat the dirt they stand on.....
Donski don't worry about Bitolski and Robert they are not Macedonians. They are a pair of ?????
Valeri - the best addition to the front of Sofia airport would be an extension of the tram system (it's not too far from tram route 20, so it's feasible.) At present the city bus connection is infrequent and not at all obvious to arriving passengers, while the situation with the taxis can best be described as chaotic.
Another Prase (Robert) enters the stage. Just like that MORON Bitolski and his NAZI pigs we have the Diaspora continually subverting any progress in this part of the world. What is it with our Diaspora. Do they leave Macedonia as normal people only to become some type of western mutants only fixated on their own crap. The Balkans have left us a legacy of progressive reconciliation. Those of us who want to move forward look to negotiations with all concerned parties. Those of us who are trapped in a TITOistic time warp remain commited to that doctrine of only us [...]
Read the full comment and them crap. PIGS like Bitolski and Robert have done a lot to hurt our country but no more they are all slowly evaporating with all their antiquity crap. Thank god Macedonia has some level headed people.
Sorry - I meant to include Aries too alongside Valeri as someone with common sense.
The story about Alexander's blue-eyed Forgotten Legions from Afghanistan has surfaced before on this site, some time ago. There may well be sone truth in it....
OH dear, Balkan soup again. The only one of you all who talks any sense is Valeri... just try to adjust to the fact that we are now in the twenty-first century, not the fifteenth.
Valeri
I appreciate your zxsensne of humor
Gruevski signed a pension agreeement with the Canadians. Soon we will be able to move back to Macedonia and collect our pensions there. Gruevski is the best PM Macedonia ever had. We the Macedonian Diaspora hold him in high esteem, he has been the best pillar of hope we ever had. I can't wait to see the Alexander statue in skopje it will look beautiful. The Greeks will cry with envy. Our statue will make there little one in Solun look like a little toy. Go Gruevski you are our man. The Macedonian-Canadians love you...........
Mile, you are right the government in 1944 started forcefully changing the names of the Macedonian Narod because of their names, Bulgarian ending. Many people were beaten, tortured, and some take away and never seen again. It was the authorities priority to stop any bulgarian sympathy which was widespread in the 40s. There are many like the idiot below (Bitolski) who seems confused thinking his name already had a -ski on the end. He claims that their names were changed into -ov, etc. but the idiot (someone called him a fascist-not too far wrong) forgets that our ancestors like Delchev, [...]
Read the full comment Karev, Gruev, Nikolov, Miladinov, etc., all had their original names. Obviously Bitolski has been educated in some mountain chicken pen where he got top marks. I used to work for the government in the archives dept. but lost my job when the fascists took over. Mile you are right to suspect a cover up. One day these fascists will be brought to account. You only have to see people like Bitolski who don't understand the world they live in they are full of hate and CRAP and nothing else. Long Live Macedonia. By the way I also have many Bulgarian cousins but they don't claim to be Macedonian and we don't hold that agaist them.
Bitolski, yes you can call yourself what you want but as a Macedonian I despise you fascist pigs who have ruined our country and keep doing so. You think you are the only one who has descendent who fought for the freedom of Macedonia. You NAZIs have to move on our ancestors would vomit day and night if they knew that what they died for was your Gruevski lovers who have nthing more in their head than picking up skirt loving statues. One day our famous leaders like Delchev, Gruev, Sandanski will see you's all burn you fascists. Long live [...]

As a Thracian, I would like to propose a new statue of Spartacus, for the front of Sofia airport!
Oh wait! Plutarch describes him as Thracian, yet he is from around Sandanski, so I think we better hurry up before our FYROM-ski friends build one themselves, right across the one of Alexander!
Bitolski:
"The Treaty of Bucharest will be void in 2012.Three more years and the fun begins." that sounds like a dire warning...
I'll tell you what: you are right, you are Macedonian and we are Thracian. Who needs that Bulgarian crap - gipsy name any way. Just one word of caution: When the phalanx of the New Empire of Macedon reach India, be ware! There's nothing but Gipsies there - trust me, I was there a few months a go.
BTW, did you know that a very large [...]

Macedonia For The Macedonians
Dear Donski!
Just to let you know that I know the history of my family tree back for 200 and more years. Never has any of my family declared to be a Serb, Bulgarian or Greek even though as this bastards were coming to Macedonia and forcibly changing Macedonian surnames to finish on "ov", "ic", or "os". I am descendant from people who fought for Macedonia against you lot. If necessary I will continue the fight. I would better die as Macedonian today, then live in shame as a Bulgarian, Greek or Serb. And yes a lot of [...]
Read the full comment us have families in Bulgaria, specially in Pirin Macedonia because they are Macedonians.
I dont read Gruevski Novels. I read true history from different sources, trying to connect the dots and create the real picture of what really happen to our nation in the last 200 years at least.
On the end of the day I dont care who are we desendant of. If the modern "greeks" who in fact are descendants of Albanians, Slavs and Vlachs and Pontic turks can claim to call them self greeks just because they happen to live in ancient greek territory from the 11 century till present, why we cant be Macedonians? We have every right to call ourselfs what we want and what we fill like. And no moron in this world can deny that right from me.

Is Bozhidar Dimitrov any relation to our Nikola Dimitrov. Is Stefan Vlahov Micov any relation to Atanas Micov from the Plovdiv University. Is Petar Nikolov from Strumica any relation to Professor Stefan Nikolov from Sofia University. My surname is Gruev but I am no relation to our leader but I have to admit there is something strange here. One day as Macedonians we have to ask ourselves why did our former leaders forcefully change everybody's name and add a -ski on the end. Haven't any of you asked yourselves that. I still find it strange that former leaders like Gligorov [...]
Read the full comment were allowed to keep their original surname and many others like my uncles changed their names to Gruevski like our todays leader. Once I asked at school and I was told to leave the room. That evening my father and uncles beat so much I couldn't walk for 3 days. This happened 15 years ago. Today I have a son and he asked me the same question I asked at school. Why do some of us have Bulgarian surnames and others even in the same family have a
-ski on the end. One day I'll find out then we can see if our schools can keep secrets like that..........
Bitolski, you certainly been reading a lot of your Gruevski novel. In Macedonia a lot of us Macedonians have Bulgarian family maybe yours forgot their family line but believe me you hate causng, simpleton by inflaming issues you are a bigger Prase than the fascist who runs our country. Soon our country will be free of all you Church building, Statue sucking fascists so our Macedonian Narod can get a better life for itself. There are Macedonians and there are Macedonians. You are from the nationalistic beggars who only live off the misery of others while we are the NAROD [...]

Mr. Chiperfield!
Lunatics are those who read only Bulgarian history books. Get out of the box that you live in and read some true history books about who the Macedonians are and specially where does your nation come from.
The brainwashed Tatars are continuing with there propaganda. You "gypsies" should be happy that the EU excepted you. Worry about your economy and not about Macedonia. You will never prevail over Macedonia. No Serbia or Greece. You divided us in 1912-1913 with the help of the great powers but never again. The Treaty of Bucharest will be void in 2012.Three more years and the fun begins.
be smart people, neighbours who fight each other make for a bad neighbourhoods!
i must say that most of the negativity/imperialistic thoughts are coming from bulgarians
Documented history from the middle ages to the 20th century testifies that the "Macedonians" are Bulgarians and that they speak Bulgarian language. The "Macedonian" were invented by the Commintern as a way to put an end to the conflict between Greeks, Serbs and Bulgarians. The
Macedonian nationality and language were proclaimed at Yaitse by Tito in 1943. Lunatics are those who refuse to read history books.
FYROM are Bulgarians, so what is the problems?
What century do we live in. What happened to self determination. How in the world does the EU ever put up with the likes of insane nationalists. Give the Macedonians the freedom they earned. Shame-on Bulgaria. Your acting like lunatics. The Greeks are the laughing stock of Europe, and I guess the Bulgars are following right behind.
IF memory serves me right, didn't the Serbs think all of Bosnia, Croatia, Monte Negro, and Kosovo was theirs. And what did that get them. ZILCH...............
Worry about freedom and free market economics and lets see the balkans prosper [...]
