Suspicions are that the August 26 2009 fire near the Bulgarian Black Sea coastal resort of Sveti Vlas that destroyed 30ha of forest was started deliberately, according to Roumen Zhelev, head of the Bourgas regional forestry department.

The fire was reported to have started on dry grass on private land and spread to a nearby pine forest, at one point coming near the Coral Beach Hotel. The blaze spread quickly because of strong winds.

Bourgas police said that the cause of the fire, between Sveti Vlas and Elenite, was being investigated. Zhelev said that his experts believed that the fire had been started deliberately.

The fire started at about 10.45am and by 4pm had been brought under control, and traffic between the two coastal cities of Varna and Bourgas was completely restored, Bulgarian news agency Focus said.

that was awful, and scary. we was there that day and got cut off from our hotel. Cars werent allowed anywhere near it so we had to walk for over two hours at quite a fast pace because we was in the last hotel that it was possible to get to on that road.

An ideal opportunity to replant 30ha of new forest.
