Customs officials in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna have seized about 1000 litres of rakiya, the country’s traditional distilled spirit, Bulgarian National Television said on August 26 2009.

The liquor was confiscated after customs inspectors could not find any documents proving that excise duties had been paid.

Customs officials, who have been conducting checks on distilleries in Varna and Shoumen, said that any if any illegal stills were found, they would be closed and their owners fined.

Fines are based on criteria including alcohol levels in the spirits, meaning that the Varna distillery could face a fine of about 6000 leva.

Officials said that criminal proceedings would be started in terms of the Excise Duty and Tax Warehouse Act.

There should be a lot of happy customs agents once they start drinking all of that siezed liquor.

Rakiya

I've been living in Bulgaria now for about 10 years, but I never cease to be amazed at the difference when you leave the city and venture into the countryside. In the villages, it can be like stepping back in time 50 years or so. Although there are now many cars and, for the older villager, his horse and cart provides transport, the land is often cultivated by hand or with donkey and plough, and it's not unusual to see old folks walking home at night with hand tools over their shoulders. Shepherds graze animals on free land around the village and then bring them home in the evening. Old peasant ladies wearing traditional village dress sit on street benches in the evening sunshine, watching the world go by, chattering about the day's events and, these days of course, what was on the television last night.
