Bulgaria's Orthodox Church has repeated its call for Bulgarians to boycott Madonna's August 29 concert, accusing the controversial singer of showing disrespect to Christianity.

About 50 000 people are expected to attend the show at Sofia's Vasil Levski Stadium. Tickets cost up to 300 leva

The Church issued a statement expressing "disapproval and disagreement" with Saturday's event, and says the American performer "openly violates" holy Christian symbols.

Tuesday's statement accused Madonna of displaying "a disrespectful and intolerant attitude" to Christians' religious feelings on her ongoing Sticky and Sweet tour.

Madonna arrives in Sofia after a concert on Wednesday in Romania. Latest reports from early on August 26 indicate that the singer has already arrived in Bucharest.

Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour has been dogged by controversy. She was recently criticised by Polish officials for scheduling a show during the Catholic holiday Feast Of The Assumption.

Tuesday's statement even refused to refer to her by name. "Louise Esther Ciccone (Madonna), with almost every concert in a Christian country, displays a disrespectful and intolerant attitude to the religious feelings of the Christians there."

The gig this Saturday reportedly coincides with another religious holy day, in which the region recognises the beheading of Saint John the Baptist by spending the day fasting.

madonna's use of BLASPHOUS IMAGERY as well as her meanspiritedness to others throughout her career is fine for the non God loving people. But the hypocrisy lies in the fact that she and others claim to promote tolerance for all, but are selective in putting it to use in their own life toward others. Im a Christian who is gay, and I think the Catholic Church is great. And, I am accepted. Nothing is perfect people, wake up! Why do you think we have the New Testament! Instead of hurting others, try to make things better.

      Right Ogi,
but more than that - her antics don't have the shocking effect either.
I think people in BG would see her because of her notoriety, and hopefully entertaining value, although I am personally going to skip that pleasure in this lifetime...

Who even cares about the Bulgarian Orthodox Church?! The vast majority of people in Bulgaria are either Atheists or nominally religious. The Church has no political influence and almost no one listens to what it has to say. Bulgaria is a very sexually liberal place and Madonna's antics do not offend our sensibilities. The Puritans never landed on our shores.

      bob:

"i wonder how her kids will turn out..probably become religious fundamentalists.."

I love it! Probably. I've seen it before where children rebel for the sake of it.

You know this just makes it clear how traditional, rebellion against tradition really is. I see every "rebel" as a boring person in need of help.

"obviously the fact the church is creating such a fuss over a concert means we still need people like Madonna to rebel against.."

      I wouldn't call that "fuss".

They feel obligated to make a little noise, like an old dog in a junkyard - it's called "symbolic usefulness illusion".

Our Church is supported by the government, which means that they are effectively government employees, like the teachers and such, with the corresponding similar complete lack of interest in their function.

Read the full comment /> I personally like them that way, but of course that creates spiritual vacuum, which is currently filled by American versions of Christianity, which are separated from their State, and as such infinitely better equipped to grow and prosper.

I think they, Mormons and such, are the danger to our secular society, not our government church, which is truly toothless and impotent, as any institution, supported by tax payer's money invariably is....

Yes, unfortunately Madonna is far more relevant for the majority of people than the Christian values. Personally for me as a Christian, it is not even so much the coincidence with a religious holiday that is concerning, but the idea of "love" that Madonna's show promotes. Equating or even substituting love with sex is simply a wrong message that has ruined so many people's lives.

Let's face it, Madonna is far more relevant to more people's lives than is the corrupt, established church.

Note from Madonna's marketing department to Bulgarian Church: Thanks for all the free publicity! Keep it up, guys!

Madonna: When it comes to my fans, the more the church complains, the more they support me.

obviously the fact the church is creating such a fuss over a concert means we still need people like Madonna to rebel against its old traditions which are constantly damaging society with their negative outlook on life.
Thank you God for giving us people like Madonna.

      P.S.
Note how she uses blacks (men) in her shows.
That is a perfect illustration, as in the American mentality, traditionally, black men interacting with white women, has been considered and offensive proposition.
I wish those old American hippies get a little cultural clue, and stop subjecting other societies to their own culture wars, as it is of no relevance with us.
It seems as though their left isn't that much different from their right in that aspect.

Frankly, this is Bulgaria and if any one has any [...]

There are somethings I like about Madonna and some things that make me uncomfortable. Nothing wrong with speaking out about something you don't like. That's life! I have no problem with her or the church.

Madonna is an (ugly) old American rebel who is still fighting a war against her society that has nothing to do with us.
She is used to extracting shocking reaction from her fellow Anglo-Saxons - not a very difficult thing to do, given their boring culture, and that constitutes her self-created identity. The problem is that what she finds shocking there, is reality in places like BG and really no big deal.
Nudity and sexuality isn't particularly interesting in free societies like Bulgaria, where pretty much everyone is free to, and mostly do, have any kind [...]

Read the full comment of sexual combination, with very little eyebrow raising.

Older cultures have learnt to accept human frailties, as a part of life, and have invariably reconciled every conceivable, so called deviation, with the otherwise their basically conservative societies.

Everyone is a damn hypocrite you, me guess we'll all find out when we die or when and if the second coming is here. I don't think there is anything wrong with the church speaking out and I don't see anything wrong with Madonna either. Everyone will make their choice.............The church and Madonna are standing up for what they believe in whats wrong with that?

The church is the one being disrespectful. NO where in the scriptures does it say to even celebrate the beheading of John the Baptist. Only Christs death should we commemorate each year. The church is disrespectful - blame it on Madonna. PA-LEASE!
