Nato boss Rasmussen heads for Turkey

Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen is due to arrive in Turkey on August 27 2009 for a two-day visit that will include meetings with top office-bearers and, notably, a conciliatory message to the Islamic world.

Rasmussen’s appointment as chief of the military alliance earlier this year initially was opposed by Ankara because Rasmussen was prime minister of Denmark at the time of a controversy about Danish newspaper cartoons lampooning the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

As prime minister of Denmark, Rasmussen refused to move against a Danish television station that supported Kurdish rebels against Turkey, further irking Ankara.

Turkish media reports said that Rasmussen was expected to speak at an August 27 dinner hosted by the Ankara branch of the Justice and Development Party and at the event would deliver a conciliatory message to Islamic countries.

His visit is a fulfillment of a pledge made when he became head of Nato, when he said that he wanted to visit Turkey and that he wanted to "come to an understanding" with the Islamic world.

During the visit, he will meet president Abdullah Gul, prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the chief of the general staff, Ilker Basbug.

Items on the agenda will include Nato’s involvement in Afghanistan, where Turkey is due to take over the rotating command of the International Security Assistance Force. Also to be discussed are the problem of piracy off Somalia and the situation in Iraq.

Turkey is also currently embroiled in a row with its fellow Nato member and neighbour Turkey over a series of incursions by Turkish jet fighters into airspace claimed by Greece. However, there has been no indication that the issue will be included in the official agenda of Rasmussen’s visit.

Salut ! I'm afraid, Aries, that on this issue I'm rather on Valeri's side. I can say from personal experience in the USA as a UK NATO delegate, that the US has always regarded itself as "master/ maitre" of the puppets, and the rest of the NATO member-nations (including the UK, Greece, and Turkey) as being the "puppets / marionettes".

Unfortunately, Turkey is of more interest to the USA as it borders on Iraq, Iran, Syria, and all sorts of other "useful" countries, whereas Greece doesn't. So the USA - possibly through the Dane Fogh Rasmussen, [...]

Read the full comment head of NATO - is going to apply all sorts of pressure in places we don't officially know about (though I can have a pretty good guess !)

Chancellor Bismarck in Germany 140 years ago called this "realpolitik". I'm afraid he was entirely right; it hasn't changed much since.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen became the 12th NATO Secretary General on 1 August 2009, succeeding Jaap de Hoop Sceffer, who held the post from 2004 until 2009. The announcement was made on 4 April 2009 in Strasbourg. During the final selection process only one country, Turkey, remained opposed to Rasmussen's candidacy, because of his handling of the Cartoon episode in 2005. Another major point of Turkey's opposition was Denmark's tolerance of Roj TV which is claimed by the Turks to be a mouthpiece for the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Eventually, Turkey withdrew its opposition to Rasmussen's appointment when it received assurances from US president Barack Obama that Turkish officials would be appointed to three high posts in NATo therefore uncle Sam did it again makimng Rasmussen to clean up the mess he was alleged to have made back in 2005.the usual trade and barter in which orientals always excell.
We are a nation that has good friend but mortal enemies due to our geopolitical status.

Aries,
this illustrates what I said that NATO ( US, who are we kidding) is more concerned with its survival/enlargement that to support one member vs another.
The US intends to delegate more and more of their wars to NATO, and junior members, like BG and FYROM in the near future, are important to them.
Greece is just creating difficultieas for them, but note how they go to Turkey instead.
Quite frankly, I think both, Greece and Turkey, are creating problems, just to see what they can get from their uncle, (Sam) [...]

Mean while all one hears is: uncle like you more because you are bigger!
No uncle likes YOU more bacause you look like his side of the family!
And so on.... fun;)
