Bulgarian National Radio is reporting that a new metro link connecting Mladost with Obelya, the most eastern and most western residential areas in Sofia respectively, will start operating on September 7.

The metro journey from Mladost to Obelya will take just 20 minutes, according to local officials. The new route will connect Sofia's two most populous quarters - Mladost and Lyulin - via the city's downtown area.

The entire underground route covers 18km in total and has 14 metro stations. The new segment worth $104 million has been financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Initial data shows the new segment will cut the capital’s transport costs by three to four per cent and also reduce congestion.

An information tourist centre will be built at Sofia University metro station offering detailed information about tourist sites and landmarks.
