Gulub Donev was dismissed from his post as head of the General Labour Inspectorate (GLI) by Social and Labour Policy Minister Totyo Mladenov on August 24 2009.

Mladenov took his decision based on Donev's actions over the last year-and-a-half, Mladenov told a news conference. During this time Donev had performed just four checks in the regional units of the inspectorate, Mladenov a former GLI head himself, said.

Donev, who was appointed head of the inspectorate in 2007, will be replaced by GLI chief secretary Roumyana Mihailova, Mladenov said.

Mihailova came on board of GLI Sofia in 2007. Before that she was head of GLI Sliven.

When he was appointed Social Minister in July, Mladenov launched a probe on a number of companies, restaurants and coffee shops for breaches of the labour code in an effort to thwart the grey economy.

In many of the cases Mladenov supervised the checks himself. One of the most frequent violations has been the absence of registered labour contracts.

On August 24 2009 Mladenov said that the ministry had recorded a total of 2413 violations so far and had issued 258 fines.
