A 22-year-old Bulgarian was arrested in Germany for transporting 63 kg of heroin worth 1.5 million euro, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily said, quoting German media.

This is the largest quantity of drugs caught by German police in the last three-and-a-half years.

The heroin was detected a week ago during a routine police check on a highway near Rosenheim, Bavaria, south of Munich. Police pulled over a Skoda Octavia with Bulgarian plates. During the check policemen suspected that the vehicle's carpet had been removed and re-surfaced.

After a thorough check a police officer found 125 packages of heroin hidden in the car's rear.

The driver said that he did not know anything about the hidden drugs and he was only supposed to drive the car to western Europe from Bulgaria. He did not know his final destination yet.

He had arrived in western Europe on a ferry to Italy from where he had entered Germany.

The driver whose name was not revealed is facing more than 10 years' imprisonment.

A Turkish truck driver caught by German police in 2006 transporting 100 kg of heroin received a 14-year sentence.
