More than 280 000 people were unemployed in July 2009, or 12 075 more than the previous month, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik quoted the state Employment Agency on August 18 2009.

These number put Bulgaria's unemployment rate at 7.62 per cent. When Social and Labour Policy Minister Totyu Mladenov stepped into office on July 27 he said that his goal was to keep the rate below 10 per cent.

According to data from employment bureaus, more than 13 000 vacancies currently existed, 9724 of which were in the private sector. However, most of these positions were for unskilled labour with salaries averaging out at 600 leva a month.

July maintained the trend of the processing industry offering the highest number of free positions (3551) followed by retail and trade (2148), construction (1132), real estate and business service (681) and agriculture (673).

On July 1  the unemployed-free positions ratio was 15 to one.
