Following the death of a six-year-old boy on August 12, Bulgaria's Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov ordered an immediate investigation into the safety of the medieval fortress of Tsarevets in the north-Bulgarian town of Veliko Turnovo, a government media statement said on August 14 2009.

Although there were no eyewitnesses, the boy was said to have climbed one of the walls of the fortress and fallen. Medics said the boy had fallen head-first, causing a severe skull-brain trauma and the clinical death of the boy, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.

The Tsarevets fortress served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's primary fortress from 1185 to 1393, and housed the royal and the patriarchal palaces. Nowadays, it is a popular tourist attraction.

The boy's parents were said to have decided to make their son's organs available for transplant.

My hats go off to the parents that made the decision to donate the organs of the young boy in this time of grief. To think of others even during the lost of their son is heroic and more Bulgarians should except that organ donation nees to become more excepted in this county. I'm sure the people that received these organs are very gratful for the parents gift of their sons organs. Good for them.

BTW that was simply an academic observation - my condolences to the boys family!!

Let's remember that being thrown off the walls was a popular and effective form of execution in Assen and Peters day!!

KEEP BULGARIA ROUGH AND READY - DOWN WITH OVER THE TOP HEALTH AND SAFTEY LAWS THAT HAVE RUINED EURO/ UK, US, AUS, NA ETC

Mat,
I do agree that the fortress is incrediably badly renovated.
It was done during Coomie times and it was basically destroied.
They ruined the ruins Matt, what's left for the county ....
The made up church on top with the socialist fresko issoo cheesy that it's worth
seeing.
It's an interesting mix between old history and commie history.

Mat,
if it wasn't Царевец, it would've been the construction site next door. BG is like a video game - danger lurking from all directions! Oh, but survival is that much sweeter;)))
I love the place...

BG,
I did note tha he was badly behaved.
I usually don't take crap from people bitching pointlessly, but I didn't read him generalizing.
The parents do deserve pity and blame in the same time, but it's important to keep in mind that this is BG and I remember how free I was growing up.
It's miracle tha I survived. At age of 6 I was out all day, climbing cliffs, playing on the train tracks, at our "villa".
At 14 - 15 our favorite think was to hang out [...]

Read the full comment the window of the train and enjoy our legs fly in the air as the train was turning the opposite direction.
Can't imagine not knowing where my kids are at any given time, but I have lived in the west, so it would be stupid to blame the parents for being part of the common culture.
My parents did the best they knew, which wasn't all that much. I am still here.
As far as foreighers, I welcome them in BG, but any collective insulting is punishable by major bitch-slapping;)
didn't read the comments below tha way...

Valeri, let's assume you were joking Friday, fine.
Now, your second comment on Sat. is not very adequate either. The dude is spewing offensive judgements and you are all "welcoming" and "open minded" about it. Stand up like a man. He had just implied that you had no "worldly" knowledge and that a fellow citizen of yours had sold their child. He is labeling us (negatively), do not label all EU citizens in BG the same.. in this case positively.

Anonymous BG Mon, Aug 17 2009 00:47 CET

To the dude: Chill out, all I hear is your judgements on where geographically the ultimate source of wisdom resides.. and again a judgement on Veliko Tarnovo residents' travel patterns.
Feel a bit sorry for the parents, please. You are saying "they kicked him over the fence for money"!!! You have the right to comment on BG, but insulting is a different issue... which you seem to be fond of.

Anonymous Mat Mon, Aug 17 2009 00:17 CET

Valeri lol....

Anyway, given that Tsarevets is completely modern and rebuilt on the ruins means there would be no problem in putting in some better safety protection

Dianne Hatton makes sense. The rest of you tend to veer off the topic a bit...though I agree we do not need a bunch of coppers all over the bloody fortress.

Now, to the topic, as I see it:

WHERE were the parents of the poor 6 years old? How about adult supervision, you retards?

Anonymous Valeri Sat, Aug 15 2009 20:32 CET

To the English guy;
save the less than polite manners about you, you are right.
Your comments to my first post were spot on, had I meant it of course.
You are also right about commenting on BG.
BG is EU, and so is the UK, so it is your country too.
I personally love having more of you move to BG, because often your folks care about the place more than many of the natives.
What we don't like, and are often predisposed (based on experience) to [...]

Read the full comment expect, is empty venom, which you did not show anyway.

Lol BG!
I can't believe that you guys didn't catch my irony!
I am making fun of people who would project every unfortunate incident in BG on their own hate/feelings of personal failure and turn it into a negative commentary on the whole society.
Just read the posts around here....

Anonymous Dianne Hatton Fri, Aug 14 2009 21:25 CET

Please Please Please don't go down the "Over the Top" Health and Safety, politically correct crap route that the UK has gone. You can't even get withing 50 metres of stonehenge now due to H & S. One of the great things about Bulgaria is the freedom to do things and explore which is fast dissapearing in Cotton Wool Europe. Keep Bulgaria free of this crap. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN !!!!!

Anonymous BG Fri, Aug 14 2009 21:06 CET

"to valeri", you think you're a big man because you're from England? You dont even have the right to have a comment on BG issues. Enjoy the sight and quit passing judgements on the travel patterns of the Veliko Tarnovo residents.. US or not is not the point. Focus on the issue... Feel a bit sorry for the parents.

Anonymous BG Fri, Aug 14 2009 20:54 CET

Valeri, you don't make NO sence... and do not deserve more comments related to what you just said.

Anonymous to valeri Fri, Aug 14 2009 19:30 CET

you have obviously never been to Scotland, Greece, Wales, and just about a hundred other places.

lemme guess. you've lived in the US and think you know the score?

no, you dont rig the bloody fortress, because thats monument destruction. its his parents fault. or they needed the money from the organ transplant and kicked him over the fence

wheres is the police? so what, they have to place a copper at every 5 yards along the wall? ifthey do that, then you will bitch, why are there [...]

Read the full comment 400 coppers at Tsarevets, and why is there so much crime in the town of Turnovo. grow up lad

Anonymous Valeri Fri, Aug 14 2009 17:25 CET

Poor parents..

Only in Bulgaria! IF we want to be European, the goverment should ensure tha no one can fall from a high wall!
First time in my life I hear of a midievil fortress, that's unsafe for a 6 year old!
What kind of country is this?
The government should declare all accidents 'against the law'!
We need more laws!
Where's the police?
What were they doing while the boy was falling?
Taking bribes I bet!

Holy 40 Martyrs Church/църквата "Свети четиридесет мъченици"

The Holy 40 Martyrs Church in Veliko Turnovo is not, as I had imagined, sitting on the crest of a wooded hill, reachable by a dirt path requiring a pilgrimage-like toil, but at the foot of Tsarevets, in a valley - the one that makes the house-decked hills of the city all the more famous. Built out of some holey stone that I cannot identify, the church is surprisingly early Middle Ages (almost Cistercian) in style. Surprisingly, perhaps, because I had expected something more "Eastern Orthodox" looking.

Architectural-Museum Reserve Tsarevets /Царевец/

Just as a trip to Athens would be incomplete without visiting the Acropolis, so the hike up to Tsarevets is an integral part of the Veliko Turnovo experience. The medieval fortress that watches over the city may not be as beautiful as its Greek counterpart, but it is steeped in history and well worth a look. Fortified as a Byzantine stronghold since the fourth century CE, it was taken in the 12th century and became the centre of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom
