The average monthly salary of teachers employed in municipal schools was 657.02 leva while the those teaching in state-owned schools received  663.88 leva a month, Education Minister Yordanka Fandakova told an August 13 2009 news conference, Bulgarian BTA news agency said.

Education was one of the areas where funds will not be cut, notwithstanding the effects of the ongoing economic crisis, said Fandakova, a former teacher and school principal. She noted that investing in teachers' qualification and motivation was one of her priorities.

She said that a total of 43 600 000 leva is expected to be allocated to schools for differential payments to teachers following the delegated budgets which were introduced by the previous government but encountered strong resistance from teachers.

Fandakova said she expected teachers will get this money in September when the new school year is scheduled to start. Traditionally,  teachers use the first school day on September 15 to remind the government about their problems, the biggest of which has been their low pay.

Two years ago teachers hold a nationwide strike for more than a month, organising massive rallies in Sofia demanding better working and financial conditions. Back then teachers agreed on an 18 per cent increase in salaries.
