Perseids meteors pass the Earth

On the nights of August 11 and 12 2009, a prolific meteor shower known as the Perseids, passed the Earth.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, but the peak in activity, when 60 or more meteors can be seen an hour, is usually mid-August. For 2009, this happened on August 11 and 12.

The meteor shower stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle, which makes it best visible on the northern hemisphere.

Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office was quoted on the NASA website as saying that "Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream sometime on August 12. Then, you could see dozens of meteors per hour."

For those who want to try and see some of the meteors tonight, NASA has the following advise: unfold a blanket on a flat patch of ground, the middle of your street is not a good choice. Lie down and look up. Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, their tails all pointing back to the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus. Get away from city lights if you can.

Unblock your ears: `Big Bang' postponed to 2009

Optimists and devotees of science must, along with pessimists dreading - or eagerly anticipating - the destruction of the universe, wait a bit longer. The `Big Bang' experiment involving the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been postponed to spring 2009. According to a September 20 2008 statement on the LHC website, "during commissioning (without beam) of the final LHC sector (sector 3-4) at high current for operation at 5 TeV, an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a large helium leak into the tunnel".

The `Big Bang'

On September 10 at 9am CEST, the first test of the most controversial experiment of the century was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is, simply, the largest particle accelerator ever built, a massive scientific achievement dedicated to unveiling obscurities in our modern conception of the universe.

Earth will hide the Moon tonight

The wonders of nature keep on surprising in August. After the solar eclipse from August 1 and the meteor shower on august 12 and 13, in the night of August 16 a partial lunar eclipse will be observed. It will begin at 10.36 pm EEST and will end on 1.45am on August 17.It is the second of only two lunar eclipses in 2008 and will be visible by most of Eastern Europe and Africa, and a large portion of Western and Central Asia and India. Parts of Australia will see the eclipse begin before

Meteor shower for the Earth tonight

Stars will be raining tonight and on the night of August 13, scientists have promised. The Perseid meteor shower takes place when Earth enters the outskirts of a cloud of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet dust enters earth atmosphere, heats to luminosity and gives the impression of falling stars. Depending on their chemical composition, the meteors burn in different colours. Rarely do such meteors reach the
