In order to speed up the purchase of new satellite images of agricultural land, Bulgaria's Government said it would launch a purchase procedure without public announcement. Only this way could it meet a September 20 deadline to have ready the new orthophotograph of the country ready, a government media statement said.

According to Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov, farmers risked not receiving farmland subsidies this year because the maps had not been updated since 2006, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.

European requirements are that 40 per cent of the land should be re-photographed every three years.

If the card was not updated, the country risked being fined anything between five and 100 per cent of the financial package, the media statement said.

Once the new photos had been purchased, the Defence Ministry would process the photos and produce the orthophotograph. This way, the Agriculture Ministry would be able to have the photos by the end of November, before the start of the payment campaign for subsidies, Dnevnik said.
