The 40-year-old police officer Lyubomir Mitov who was critically injured after a high speed chase in the town Svoge, just outside Sofia on July 10 2009, has died, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said on August 12 2009.

Mitov was left in a critical condition following an operation that resulted in the capture of two criminals.

After committing an armed robbery at a private house in Svoge, inhabited by two women and a child, the armed pair exerted physical force over the women, then proceeded to steal their AUV and make their escape.

Police received the alarm at 6.04am. Almost immediately a police patrol intercepted the jeep and a high speed chase ensued, with the AUV losing control at a sharp turn. With that, a shootout ensued in which Mitov was shot twice, in the abdomen and in the head.

Both criminals were subsequently captured by police, disarmed and taken into custody and face a minimum sentence of 20 to 30 years, or even life without parole.

Mitov's actions were widely praised by his colleagues who queued for days in the hospital to donate blood.

Saddened:

"at last a cop displays some bravery and moral backbone and has to pay this tragic heavy price. No wonder most cops here can't be bothered to do their job."

Why do you have to say "here"? Only a Bulgarian hater, or a Bulgarian self-hater, would use a positive example, to make a negative comment about the country... It's the same everywhere. Being a cop is a dangerous job. I am saddened too, but there's nothing "here" here....
