Torrential rains over the area of Dobrich on August 7 caused damage of more than 2 916 000 leva, according to a municipal report due to be submitted to the Cabinet on August 12, Dnevnik daily reported.

Most damages were incurred by local companies and citizens. By contrast, damage to municipal properties amounted to 817 500 leva.

Among the most affected are the Diagnostic-Consultive Centre-2 in Dobrich, where damage was estimated at 467 700 leva. The deluge devastated roads and infrastructure, flooding two schools as well as industrial zones, small factories and others.

Over the course of two hours on the afternoon of Friday August 7, a 91 litre a sq m downpour caused widespread mayhem and devastation. Scores of cars were swept by the torrent, smashing into one another. Basements, warehouses and houses were flooded.

Reportedly, water levels rose up to three metres in some areas, smashing into a warehouse where the lives of a 10-year-old boy and several workers were threatened. They were saved by the rapid reaction of the fire brigade who rescued them with inflatable boats.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov has visited the site of devastation in Dobrich and has ordered police units to be deployed around the perimeter in constant vigil to prevent looting.

Most of the property destroyed, belonging to companies and citizens is not insured, prompting Borissov to consult advisers as to what action can be undertaken by the government to alleviate the situation.
