Seven times Formula One champion Michael Schumacher abandoned his Formula One comeback with Ferrari because of a neck injury, which he could could not shed on time.

"Unfortunately we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck which occurred after a private F1-day in Mugello," Schumacher was quoted as saying on his website.

The 40-year-old German champion who announced he would step up and help the team after the horror injury of Felipe Massa, was struggling from a neck injury which he sustained in a motorcycle crash in February 2009. His intensive preparation to reach full fitness saw him lose three kilos, but the ache in his neck would not go away in time for him to participate in the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 23 August.

"The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe," he said.

"That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by F1 yet. These are the clear results of the examinations we did on the course of the past two weeks and the final examination on Monday afternoon," Schumacher said.

"I am disappointed to the core, I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me," he said.
