The following images were taken in late July 2009, during our climb to the summit of Malyovitsa, in Rila National Park.

This is the controversial chair lift which ferries tourists from the once quiet lodge of Pionerska up to the Seven Lakes District of Rila Mountain, an otherwise 2.5 hour pleasant and beautiful hike through ancient pine forests.

Apart from the obvious deforestation from the construction itself, we witnessed piles of rubbish, discarded construction material along the road and, of course, hundreds of vehicles, parked in every manner imaginable, swerving all the way from the lift station down to the lodge and below.

At the Pionerska lodge, there was a paid parking, something unheard of in lodges elsewhere in Rila or any other mountain in Bulgaria for that matter. The area immediately around the lodge's perimeter was also... well, not the cleanest one you would expect from a place in the middle of a national park.

Can not you put an asphalt road so we do not have to walk on gravel? I get sore feet and to walk on gravel.
