"I love Rila and I like hiking" is the motto of the national march from Vitosha to Rila mountain, set for Wednesday, August 13.

The duration of the exercise will last three days, starting at 9.30am from the Aleko Lodge in Vitosha, passing Vitosha, Verila and ending in Rila's Seven Lakes district, where a rally will be organised against continuing illegal deforestation and development of the region.

The event is organised by Citizens for Rila along with a coalition comprising more than 30 non-governmental organisations and citizen groups and associations. Partners in the scheme are the Vitosha Nature Park and Rila National Park, a press statement from the organisers was quoted as saying.

"We want to reinstate the love of mountains in people's hearts and minds. We want to convey the message that the best way to preserve the mountain and show your respect for it is to walk across it and get to know it personally," said Mihail Mihov from Citizens for Rila.

"Furthermore, we want to address the issues concerning ongoing illegal construction as well as projects planned for large-scale expansion of ski zones in both Vitosha and Rila mountains," he said.
