Unemployment rose to 7.6 per cent in July from 7.3 per cent the previous month in the wake of the economic crisis, Labour and Social Policy Minister Totyu Mladenov has announced.

Speaking to national radio, Mladenov said that the jobless rate had ben increasing in recent months but that the new Government of Prime Minister Boiko Borissov would use funds from the European Union to create jobs. He conceded that about 22 000 people had lost their jobs since January.

'The unemployment rate began to rise in December 2008... We will try to assimilate more European Union's funds to help businesses and the labour market,' Mladenov said.

Some analysts and trade union leaders have forecast that unemployment could reach double digits by the end of the year as recession continues to bite.
