Vanyo Tanov has been appointed as the new head of the National Customs Agency, a government media statement said on August 7 2009.

Tanov, a long-standing employee at the Interior Ministry, was nominated by Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov.

The new head of the NCA received his work instructions from Prime Minister Boiko Borissov, the media statement said. Tanov would focus on ending smuggling and the abuse of excise duties and bringing about transparency and co-operation with non-governmental organisations to verify any reports about violations at the agency that appear in the media.

The computer systems of the NCA and the National Revenue Agency had already been linked up and officials of the two agencies now had access to both databases, the media statement said.

The computer link between the two agencies was forged at the insistence of Dyankov, who in recent interviews repeatedly said the Bulgarian state missed out on hundreds of millions in excise duties annually.

At an official ceremony at the Finance Ministry on August 7, Tanov and NRA head Krasimir Stefanov signed an agreement between the two agencies to enable officials from both administrations to work more closely together.
