Premier Borissov to visit region affected by the earthquake on August 4

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov will visit the area affected by the August 4 earthquake in northeastern Bulgaria, Shabla and Kamen Bryag, the government press centre has announced.

Borissov will assess damages incurred in the region and is set to discuss potential state intervention with local municipal officials.

The tremor’s epicentre reportedly was 63km southeast of Varna, close to the Kaliakra Horn and two km below the sea surface. It registered five on the Richter scale and was felt throughout northeastern Bulgaria and beyond, including southern parts of the country and even Romania.

Buildings in the region have been damaged by the tremor to varying degrees. In Shabla, there are structures with cracked walls and fallen chimneys; the mayor’s house in Kamen Bryag was also damaged. The hospital in Balchik suffered cracks on some of its walls, some other buildings in the town were also affected.

Nikolay Mishev, director of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, confirmed on August 5 that the earthquake was the strongest one yet this year.
