Martin Petrov scores as Manchester City lose to Rangers

Manchester City's Martin Petrov (R) celebrates with team mate Emmanuel Adebayor after scoring during their friendly match against Rangers at Ibrox stadium in Glasgow

The richest club on the planet, Manchester City, received a spanking at Ibrox in a very entertaining friendly on August 5. Bulgarian striker Martin Petrov scored for his rich club, giving City the 2-1 lead, but eventually the Sheiks were overwhelmed by the passion and drive of the Scottish champions.

Rangers proved more than a match for the second biggest spenders in the summer transfer window so far. The lavishly funded City project under the Abu Dhabi United Investment Group made sure that the encounter with Rangers at Ibrox was not only a sold out one, but a dramatic affair that swung both ways.

Bulgarian Martin Petrov went into action in the second half, subbing new City signing Gareth Barry. At the time, the score was 1-1 with goals from Ranger's Nacho Novo  and Stephen Ireland for City.

Come the 52nd minute, Petrov was fed an exquisite pass from Robinho, and after a powerful sprint forward, the Bulgarian unleashed the ball at the back of the net, giving Manchester City the lead, 2-1, this being his third goal in the summer off-season programme.

Rangers were not going to allow some rich boys to take liberties at Ibrox, however, and went back on level terms with an equally superb goal just over a minute later with  Pedro Mendes and Davis setting up Miller in the clear, as the striker left Shay Given stranded with a beautifully calculated lob from about 16 metres.

With the score levelled at 2-2, Rangers turned the screws and surged ever forward. Substitute John Fleck was close to scoring a goal after he was presented with a decent opportunity, but it was left to Rangers veteran Weir to slot in the third, giving the hosts a deserved victory in a dramatic encounter.
