A Romanian mountaineer has died in the Alps and his companion left in critical condition on August 5, the Bulgarian news agency has reported, citing Romanian media.

The climber plunged to his death while descending from the summit of Mont Blanc, in the French Alps at a height of 4000m. Both climbers were rigged together when the first one lost his footing and slipped 200m in the Dome du Gouter crevasse, the Romanian dailies report.

His fellow companion, according to Alin Serbanesc from the Romanian foreign ministry, is also a Romanian citizen. He was flown into a hospital in France, where he is in a critical condition, having suffered multiple fractures.

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps, and in Western Europe, at 4810m. The mountain is commonly regarded as the highest mountain in Europe, when in fact it is the second highest, after Mount Elbrus, a volcano in the western Caucasus mountain range,  Russia, near the border of Georgia. Mt. Elbrus (west summit) stands at 5642m.
