Boulevard in Rousse still under construction a month after official inauguration

Exactly a month has passed since the official unveiling of the Bulgaria Boulevard in the northeastern city of Rousse, but construction work continues apace.

The boulevard had a notorious reputation with its numerous heavy traffic accidents and scores of injured people, as well as several fatalities, when it was finally decided that the long due overhaul could no longer be postponed.

The segment under construction is on the entrance/exit leading towards Sofia and was officially opened for exploitation at the beginning of July by Meglena Plugchieva from the Blue Coalition and Rousse mayor, Bojidar Yotov, Dnevnik daily reported.

The reconstruction and renovation work has so far taken three years. The boulevard has six lanes altogether with a total length of 13.68km.

In the summer of 2006, the project was earmarked for a face-lift, and designated under lot 8 from the Transit Roads IV programme, co-financed by the European Investment Bank at a total cost of 19.6 million leva, according to 2006 estimates.

The boulevard's pavements, as well as some additional auxiliary installations, are still under construction.
