The tomb of a Bulgarian princess was discovered in the northern Bulgarian town of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria's medieval capital, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said.

Archaeologists Nikolai Ovcharov and Hitko Vachev have excavated on August 2 what has been described as the grave of a Bulgarian princess, buried in the courtyard of the St St Peter and Pavel church in Veliko Tarnovo.

According to the two archaeologists, they have concluded that the grave dates back to the 14th century or earlier, sometime after the reign of tsar Ivan Assen II. The princess was found wearing "luxurious clothes trimmed with golden ribbon; excellently crafted jewelry; a golden ring, earrings, silver and golden pins were also found around the buried body", the BNR said.

Archaeologists have discovered over 100 artifacts since excavation work commenced two months ago at the St St Peter and Pavel as well as St Ivan Rilski churches in Veliko Turnovo. Most of discovered finds consist of golden jewelry. Once the items are restored, they will exhibited at the town's history museum in autumn 2009.

Don't fret Tony: you're no princess, no one will be digging your boring ass up.

We learn so much about our predecessors and refine our knowledge about how they lived when we study their physical and cultural remains. This princess' tomb and her name was forgotten; now she re-emerges from history as a real person. I could only hope that one day the discovery of my bones might teach my descendants something about their ancient past!

Hi Tony: Apparently you've never been homeless. Concern for disposal of the dead is always a cultural prejudice. Ones identity is assumed to persist with the remains, so some tribes ate their dead to keep them relevant. Preservation is only temporary though, even when an organism becomes fossilized, minerals replace tissue, and the original identity is replaced with an impression, so that identity and purpose remains solely with the perceiver. It's good to honor the dead, but their form is irrelevant. By studying them we can still learn from things they abandoned.

What is the difference between opening graves, restoring artifacts and exhibiting them in museums and simple grave robbing. I shudder to think that my possesions will one day be taken from my dead body disrespectfully and exhibited. You have no shame people!
