Aston Villa hit by Stiliyan Petrov injury

Bulgarian international and Aston Villa player of the year, Stiliyan Petrov, sustained a shoulder injury and is a doubt for the first game of the Premier League season, the BBC has reported.  The Bulgarian was on the receiving end of a misfortunate landing during Villa's 3-1 Peace Cup win over Atlante in Spain on July 29.

Midway through the first half against the Mexican side, Petrov fell awkwardly and dislocated his left shoulder, ending the Bulgarian’s participation in the Peace Cup.

Petrov was sent back to England on July 31 for an examination and medical treatment, joining Luke Young at Bodymoor Heath. It will be an arduous wait for the next 48 hours, the time necessary for the injury to settle, before it can be assessed if he can be a part of Aston Villa’s beginning of the Premier League season.

This latest debacle means Villa are now a squad stretched by four departures and two players injured. "It's pretty obvious he may be a doubt for the start of the season," Villa boss Martin O'Neill said, quoted by the BBC.

"At this stage we just don't know about the length of time he will be out."

Premiership champions?

The season in the English Premiership is just around the corner – at last.
