Editorial: Call back the past

With the change of government, debate on dealing with Bulgaria’s communist-era past has been reopened.

The revival has been sparked by two apparently contradictory moves by the ruling party; first, to bar from leadership positions in Parliament anyone tainted by having worked with the communist security services; second, to appoint to Cabinet office a minister known to have collaborated with the security services.

Matters went a step further when Prime Minister Boiko Borissov said that he would like to have all the dossiers of former agents and collaborators online – a move that polls suggest is supported by most Bulgarians. There is talk of extending the ban on former collaborators from all branches of public office-bearers.

No government yet has fulfilled the need for a clear policy on former collaborators. The new one has a historic opportunity to clean this running sore, for once and for all.

So what was a very young Borisov doing being seen in the company of Todor Zhivkov? Sure many people have seen the photographs. Trying to tell me Borisov has no lonks to this period? Be real.

The proactive and public policy of Boiko Borissov’s Government in defending the rights of Bulgarians abroad has been warmly welcomed by a constituency who for years has been complaining about the disregard of its embassy.

The performance of the Government in actual delivery of assistance – money and equipment – and in aiding recovery in the coming months must be kept under the most careful scrutiny.
