With 51 votes in favour and one abstention, Sofia City Council voted Minko Gerdjikov as interim mayor of Sofia on July 29, two days after Boiko Borissov was confirmed by Parliament as Prime Minister, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.

Gerdjikov will be serving as interim mayor until a new one is elected in the autumn. A date is still to be set by President Georgi Purvanov and it is expected to be in the second half of October.

"The most important thing is to maintain the momentum that Boiko Borissov set. Before the end of the year we have to open another eight kindergartens and eight sport facilities, and on September 1, we start the metro between the Mladost 1 and Lyulin boroughs," Gerdjikov was quoted by Dnevnik as saying.

Other tasks Gerdjikov said will have to be completed while he is acting mayor, include the bidding process for the construction of a waste processing plant and the selection of cleaning companies that would service the city from spring 2010.

Indirectly, Gerdjikov said he would not run for mayor. "I believe I am prepared and competent for the function of deputy mayor for finance and hope to be able to serve the next mayor," Gerdjikov was quoted by Dnevnik as saying.
