Michael Schumacher may return to Formula 1 after Felipe Massa's horror injury

Michael Schumacher

Felipe Massa's condition is being described now as "severe but not critical" after surgery on his fractured skull, but concern remains about potential long-lasting damage to his left eye - which could be a career-ending injury.

The Times of London said that there was already speculation that Michael Schumacher could replace him at Ferrari, at least until the end of the season.

"We don't know if he'll be able to race again. It's too early to say about his future," added Ferrari team surgeon Robert Veres, as quoted by the BBC.

Massa's eye was injured when a spring from Ruben Barrichello's car hit him in a qualifying round in Hungary on July 25.

Massa, who is conscious but in poor condition, was able to communicate with his relatives, was breathing unassisted and moving his limbs at the AEK Military Hospital in Budapest. Those indicators are all positive in the sense that it appears the worst is over – Massa will survive his horrendous crash, but doctors are skeptical, at least for the moment, regarding his eye's condition.

Hungarian neuro-surgeon Robert Veres, who operated on Massa's skull fracture, has insisted that Massa's season is well and truly over.

"He has suffered some damage to the eye. We don't know if he'll be able to race again," Veres said, as quoted by the Guardian. "It's too early to say about his future. We don't know the extent of the damage. Without an operation it's hard to evaluate its function."

"His condition has improved significantly over the past 24 hours and he remains stable," said Lajos Zsiros, Hungary's defence forces's chief surgeon. "If his vision is impaired, however, Massa's will not be able to race again for Ferrari or anyone else".

According to reports, Schumacher's potential return to F1 is questionable because of his injuries from a motorbike fall in Spain, in February 2009. The Times of London however says that "if needed he is prepared to return to racing".

Another potential replacement is Mirko Bortolotti, the 19-year-old Italian Formula Two driver, who impressed when given the chance to test the 2008 Ferrari Formula One in 2008.

If I'm not mistaken, Schumacher is only 38 years old not 40.

Anonymous Ken Sopcinski Wed, Jul 29 2009 02:33 CET

And all the best to Filipe and his family.

Schumacher coming back to finish Massa's season would be truely an amazing thing. However has he been training hard enough? Asking a 40 yrs old to get back into a car after a year and a half is a lot to ask. Plus being a Minnesota Vikings fan, I just heard that Farve is not going to play- so I am afraid to even wish for Schumi.

poor massa. what a great driver. dont think they should bring schumacher back. get well soon. our thoughts are with him and his family.

Anonymous FerarriBoy Wed, Jul 29 2009 00:19 CET

Wait, you guys telling me that Schumu only one because of the car. You obviously have no idea what your talking about. The reason they got the car going so fast is mostly because of his input. That's why he's the greatest ever. He's the only driver that can ever help in a car's development. Of course they dumped alot of money but thats not the reason why they were successful, hek if money was the only thing needed then why can't Toyota even win one race?

Anonymous mike Tue, Jul 28 2009 17:27 CET

yes schumi just drive and do what you love the most. Felipe God Bless you!

Personally, I don't think that if Schumacher did return he'd be at any risk of being 'blown away' by the new guys. He's a natural talent, possibly the best that F1 has ever seen and he's been keeping his hand on the wheel in a variety of race cars as well as the current Ferrari F2009. Also, I think that Raikkonen showed this weekend that the car is capable of competing at the front of the grid. It would be great to see Michael back in the car. So long as it's not for too long! Massa will definitely be [...]

Anonymous Vishal Tue, Jul 28 2009 16:00 CET

Massa's recovery would be a speedy one to see his car been driven by the legend(MS)..... Wish you a speedy recovery FM....

Anonymous Danny Tue, Jul 28 2009 15:59 CET

Schumacher was a good driver yes you can't deny that however allot of it had to do with this car and the endless amount of money Ferrari could put into it, I don't think he could hack it now considering Ferrari’s cars at the moment

Anonymous Rita Tue, Jul 28 2009 15:56 CET

Wishing Filipe a speedy and complete recovery very soon.

Anonymous DomF1 Tue, Jul 28 2009 15:12 CET

I think it would be great to see Schumi back. I agree with Mr Brown that it is unfortunate circumstances and wish felipe a spedy recovery

Anonymous Mike Goetsch Tue, Jul 28 2009 14:42 CET

Whilst it would be fantastic to have Schumi back, I always feared he may wait too long and tarnish his image by being blown away by the new guys. Very sad for Felipe - get 100% fit soon!

Anonymous b kenyon Tue, Jul 28 2009 14:21 CET

If Micheal Schumacher returned to F1 so would millions of fans. He retired much to soon.

Anonymous GASPER Tue, Jul 28 2009 13:57 CET

Anonymous Karl Tue, Jul 28 2009 13:56 CET

Totally irresponsible, sensationalist journalism. And to think the great Schumi had to deal with idiots like you all his career.

Anonymous david brown Tue, Jul 28 2009 13:53 CET

I would love to see MS back in F1.Its just a shame it is as a result of a horrific injury to Massa a real Gentleman and a great ambassador for F1. Good luck Felipe

Anonymous Davie B Tue, Jul 28 2009 13:21 CET

PLEASE....Bring back the greatest driver of all time!

Anonymous Leon "schumi" Boshoff Tue, Jul 28 2009 13:07 CET
