Felipe Massa's condition: 'life-threatening but stable'

Marshals remove the Ferrari Formula One car driven by Felipe Massa of Brazil after he crashed during the qualification session of the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest July 25, 2009.

Following the dramatic accident broadcast live during qualifying sessions on July 25  2009 which caused serious injuries to Brazilian driver Felipe Massa, his condition is still regarded as  "life‑threatening". Doctors say that he has been stabilised,  following "reassuring" results of his surgery on multiple skull fractures, but it is still too early to issue assurances about his health or predict long-term effects of the injuries.

AEK hospital director Peter Bazso, asked if Massa's life remained in danger, said: "Yes, of course" the Guardian reported.

The freak accident occurred when a one kg spring from Rubens Baririchello's car turned into a lethal projectile as it bounced on the tarmac at the Hungaroring and ploughed straight into Massa's helmet, smashing through the glass, while he was driving at more than 200 km/h. The massive impact knocked the Brazilian unconscious as his car speared off the track and slammed into a tyre wall at full throttle.

It is speculated that Massa's  feet were pressing simultaneously on both the throttle and brake as his ploughed head on into a tyre wall at about 185 km/h

Bazso was quoted as saying by the BBC that "Massa would remain sedated until tomorrow (July 27), but would be woken up periodically".

Massa's parents and pregnant wife Anna Rafaela arrived at the hospital on July 27 from Brazil, and doctors woke Massa temporarily to check on his condition and so that he could see his family.

F1 Fan you have to be joking, as much as this is a terrible thing and I hope massa recovers soon and gets to drive again you can't penalize Brawn for this, accidents happen no matter how much you try to prevent them

forza felipe,wish you the best.

This is really unfortunate. Isn't there some regulations to ensure such parts do not fall off, especially so when there is no crash to begin with? Should Brawn be penalized for this?

May God watch over you and your family. May he smile on you with good grace and allow you to race once again. Get Well Quick

Felipe, I lit a candle during my church service yesterday and said a special prayer. God willing, you WILL recover & you WILL regain the chance to drive again. You have been given a special gift in your talent, and it's always a pleasure to watch you on television. I live in Wyoming in the United States & wish I had the opportunity to watch you, in person, drive during any of the Formula 1 races. I shall continue praying for your recovery and also praying for your lovely wife and family to "keep the faith" as they stand with [...]

My thoughts on Saturday were not on who got pole but how Massa was getting on! Well done Hamilton, hopefully it won't be the only win this season :-). Massa, get better soon and i hope you are able to get into F1 again.
Brawn's car should never have anything come flying off like that, i am dissapointed!!
