Work on the Sofia metro has caused a capital city landmark, the Central Military Club, to "lean dangerously" by four cm, Bulgarian-language mass-circulation daily Trud said on July 26 2009.

The lean was in the direction of Tsar Osvododitel Boulevard, the newspaper said.

Trud said that the route of the underground railway was very close to the Central Military Club. Already there were cracks in the building and some ornamentation had fallen off.

"The building has warped," the newspaper quoted Military Club employees as saying.

The foundation stone of the building, designed by Czech architect Antonin Kolar, was laid in 1895. The building has had many uses, including hosting concerts, and is a popular choice for diplomatic and official receptions.
