Police bust exam-buying scheme in Bulgarian university

Allegations of corruption are not unique to UNWE and acceptance to the school remains highly sought after by highschool graduates.

Bulgarian police and prosecutors busted an organised group that routinely fixed examinations at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia, the Interior Ministry said on July 24.

Two men, one of them a professor at UNWE and an intermediary, were arrested on July 23, the ministry said.

Rather than directly bribe the professor, the group used doubles - people who would stand in for the prospective students at admission exams, using counterfeit ID. Fees ranged between 500 leva and 4000 leva, the police said.

The investigation was launched some time ago and was carried out by the corruption-fighting unit in the criminal police department together with the Interior Ministry's regional directorate in Blagoevgrad, in southwestern Bulgaria, Sofia chief prosecutor Nikolai Kokinov said, as quoted by Focus news agency.

Charges would be pressed by the end of the day on July 24, Kokinov said, but declined to comment whether the group had accomplices higher up in the university hierarchy. The investigators were also checking whether the group carried out similar activities in other universities, the police said.

UNWE said in a statement, quoted by Dnevnik daily, that "neither the university president, nor any other member of the UNWE management have any information on the case." The university, according to the statement, had not been contacted by the police on the case.

The university ordered an internal investigation and said that it would sack any staff involved in exam buying.

Well it's about time, this has been happening since I was a student there back in 2001, it was so obvious and now they decide to do something about this, maybe they are just getting to it since it's not a high priority case. Peoplei if you want our country to be taken seriously and be competitive in the EU then we need to start acting like we care and stop all of this nonsense of buying this or that and work for it. This is why student are coming out of with a Masters degree and don't know a [...]

Read the full comment think about what they studied. Their IQ is that of a high school student because of it and the teacher just keep on passing them on to the next grade so it's not there problem anymore. Bulgarians are under educated, that's a fact. In any course of study if you test someone, they will fail, because they have gotten by on the backs of someone they know or that Daddy knows. One example is a guy that is not a stupid guy but he wanted to be a doctor and he didn't have the grades to get into medical school which I must say here is not very hard. Well daddy got him in by paying off someone he knew and today this young doctor is practing surgery,"SURGERY" can you believe this? What kind of coutry is this? I can tell you I would not let this guy touch a dog wounded on the streets of Sofia he is that inept. So the next time you go to your professional whatever, ask to see how many hours of study they have done or talk with 3 other people and ask abou them, do your homework. It could be in medicine, computer repair, whatever, it could be in anything. I apoligize to those of you that actually went to school and studied and "EARNED" their diploma's and good for you.
