No cigar: Kotooshu suffers second defeat in Nagoya sumo tournament

Kotooshu, left, has won his only top tournament in May 2008.

Bulgarian sumo wrestler Kotooshu, born Kaloyan Mahlyanov, was defeated in the final match of day 13 of the July Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan's Nagoya on July 24. In a bout that was expected to go a long way towards deciding the tournament's winner, Kotooshu lost to yokozuna Hakuho, who is now the sole leader with a record of 12 wins in 13 matches, one more than the Bulgarian.

Kotooshu, who is ranked ozeki (champion), one notch below the pinnacle of the rankings, yokozuna, was thrown on the clay as Hakuho used one of his preferred techniques, uwatenage.

Kotooshu is now in his third year as ozeki, during which he won one tournament in May 2008. Hakuho, who rose swiftly through the rankings to become yokozuna in July 2007, has 10 tournament wins and is now the favourite to add another one.

To stand any chance of winning the Emperor's Cup, Kotooshu must defeat the other yokozuna, Asashoryu, in his next match on July 25 and hope that Hakuho stumbles. Asashoryu has 10 wins from 13 matches.

The tournament runs until July 26 at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya.
