Old and disused studios in the Sulza I Smiah (Tear and Laughter) theatre in Sofia caught fire on the evening of July 23, the Interior Ministry said.

The theatre is on Slavianska Street in the centre of Sofia, near the Ministry of Economy and Energy, several embassies and Slavianska Beseda hotel, as well as a number of other administrative buildings.

Plumes of smoke were towering over the theatre and the hotel. Witnesses said that 15 minutes after the blaze engulfed sections of the building, three firefighting units were on the scene.

One possible explanation for the conflagration is that it was sparked by a homeless person who lived there for a "considerable amount of time".

The firefighters eventually tackled the blaze. There were no casualties, nor were any of the adjacent buildings affected. Damages are yet to be estimated.

In a separate incident, there was another fire in the south-eastern Sofia borough of Simeonovo by the Vitosha Mountain. There were no reported casualties.

The fires happened as temperatures climbed on the eve of a heatwave predicted to grip Bulgaria for two days from July 24, with the mercury in some places expected to exceed 40 deg C.
