US jazz singer Deborah Carter live in Smolyan at July Jazz Festival

Thu, Jul 23 2009 13:04 CET 2539 Views
Acclaimed US jazz singer Deborah Carter, known for her velvet voice, will perform at a free concert on July 24 in  the open-air amphitheatre in Smolyan, as part of the July Jazz Festival, a US embassy media statement said. All concerts are at the open-air-theatre and entrance is free.

US-born Carter  grew up in Hawaii and later on moved to Japan. Subsequently, she travelled extensively performing in jazz festivals, jazz clubs,  radio and TV shows through Europe and Asia, by herself, with her trio or as a guest with various formations

She is renowned for administering some of her multi-cultural experiences into her music compositions, all composed by herself.

"We are so privileged in this day and age to have an open door to other cultures and perspectives that enrich our own," she was quoted as saying by her website.

The July Jazz Festival 2009 is being supported for the first time by the US embassy in Sofia, which organised for the singer to come to Bulgaria.

Deborah's fans will be treated to some of her vintage material as well as songs from her newest release, Blue Notes and Red Shoes, which  was recorded with her long-standing trio together with internationally renowned guest artists.

The work itself is labelled as  "metropolitan jazz".

"It's a kind of jazz that reflects the energy and spirit of any capital city, in this 21st century, that has absorbed the influences and cosmopolitan aspects of its inhabitants. And it's definitely a Saturday night jazz!" Deborah was quoted as saying.

July Jazz Festival 2009 so far has enjoyed an impressive bill, with the Warsaw Village Band from Poland; Italian Connection 1 from Italy; Subtone from Germany; A Fula’s Call with musicians from Senegal, Germany, the Caribbean, Holland and Iran; and Boi Akih from the Netherlands and the Maluku Islands all having participated.

This is the fifth such event, which aims to bring together the best of local jazz talent and provide exposure for local and foreign talent.
