Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov conferred on Nancy McEldowney, the outgoing US ambassador to Bulgaria, the country’s highest honour, the Stara Planina first class, at a ceremony on July 23.

Bulgarian-American relations were at their best in their 106-year history because the countries were engaged in unprecedented dialogue, Purvanov said, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.

"Nancy McEldowney had a flying start to her ambassadorial term, she has done a lot of work," BTA quoted Purvanov as saying.

McEldowney arrived in Sofia in August 2008 and presented her credentials the same month. Her previous posting was deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Ankara. Before that, she was deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Azerbaijan.

McEldowney was recalled to Washington to assume the position of principal deputy assistant secretary of state in the bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, a US embassy statement said on June 9 2009. There will be a Charge d’Affaires at the embassy until the next ambassador is in place, the statement said.
