Public transport in Sofia is in dire need of a further 40 million leva funding, alternatively it faces the grim possibility of ending the year with an accummulated loss, once again.

In 2008 the two transport companies, Stolichen Avtotransport and Stolichen Elektrotransport, accumulated a total of 13 million leva in outstanding financial obligations. To a large extent,, the entire municipal economy suffered in the same way.

This year, the municipality has allocated 100 million leva for the transport companies, but it is feared that it will not be sufficient, Dnevnik daily said.

"In order to tackle the financial loss, Stolichen Avtotransport has proposed that the charge per km must be upped from 2.68 leva to 3.03 leva/km. The alternative is that the company will accumulate further losses, which will prevent it from the contemplated purchase of 50 new vehicles," said Assen Dobranov, the company's executive manager.

"The company has already paid for the leasing of 44 buses that were purchased, but in the first quarter of 2009 alone, we have amassed a loss exceeding 900 000 leva," he said.

According to Dobranov, the aforementioned debt could be attributed to the rise in oil prices, as well as the payments the company had made for the new vehicles.

Further expenses were aggregated by the municipal company as they had to cover for some lines allocated to the private company Karat C.
