Bulgarian border police at the Danube Bridge checkpoint found 62.5 kg of heroin, State Agency for National Security (SANS) said on July 21 2009.

The drugs were thought to have been destined for The Netherlands.

The drugs were found in a van, driven by a 37 year-old Bulgarian national, in a joint operation by SANS, the border police and the National Customs Agency, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

The driver was thought to be part of an organised crime group.

The regional prosecutor in Rousse had started pre-trial proceedings, BTA said.
