Croatia struck by 31 potential swine flu cases as holidaymakers return from Spain

Croatian authorities have said that 31 people have been hospitalised temporarily in the town of Šibenik after they all displayed the typical symptoms of the H1N1 flu strain, Bulgarian news agency BTA said on July 20, quoting Croatian public health officials.

Samples have been taken from the affected after which they have been given appropriate medication and were released for home medication. One person, however, has been quarantined.

People who were in contact with the 31 individuals were also summoned to the hospital and given medication.

All of the affected are college students who had returned from a holiday in Spain. So far, there are 26 confirmed cases in Croatia, most of which have been treated successfully, the health ministry has said.

In a statement meant to dispel public unease, the Croatian health ministry has rejected speculation of pandemic, insisting that there was no need for panic and that it had "the capability and capacity to tackle the situation accordingly".
