Traffic police to check coaches

A bus crash in the forest in the area of Bakadjik, near the town of Yambol, some 260 km southeast of Sofia, killed 16 people on May 28 2009.

Across the European Union, traffic police will embark on a week-long campaign to check passenger coaches for compliance with EU norms, the Interior Ministry said in a media statement.

The operation will be conducted from July 20 to July 26 and its goal is to curtail accidents by keeping sub-standard coaches off the roads and to undertake effective measures against traffic violations.

According to EU data, quoted by the Interior Ministry, a substantial proportion of fatal traffic collisions in 2008 were caused by coaches. The main reasons sited for that were traffic violations, excessive speed, and the use of perception-altering substances.

In Bulgaria, a special task force will be launched by the Interior Ministry with the cooperation of the traffic police department which is entrusted with "conducting enhanced controls nationwide".

The operation is carried out across the EU by all members of Tispol, the European traffic police network.

Thats screwed the public transport system then. I calculate that there are probably no more than 2 'legal' coaches in Bulgaria. As for municipal vehicles, they are not just illegal, but possitively lethal. I wager the KAT have been asked to restrict checks to vehicles on dirt roads, no closer than 60 kilometers from any town or village, and only between 01:00 and 04:00 daily. Hope so, else we will all be walking to work in the near future.
