David Beckham returning to the English Premiership?

David Beckham.

The world’s greatest football showdown – the World Cup in South Africa - is less than a year away, and David Beckham knows that if he wants to be a part of it, in what would be his swansong with England, he must leave the Major League Soccer (MLS) behind and return to first class European football.

On returning to the United States from his loan spell with AC Milan, Beckham was subjected to a hostile barrage from La Galaxy supporters during their team’s 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on July 16.

LA fans are unhappy with Beckham’s decision to leave the United States for a six-month loan spell last season, and his current ambition to remain in Italy. The sentiments are fuelled by what some fans consider as "ingratitude in the highest order" as the Englishman is receiving far superior wages to anyone else in the team, and is still "desperate to leave" in order to "salvage his international career". In Beckham’s defence, he has always insisted that England comes first

Beckham has put on a defiant face, claiming that the verbal abuse he received during LA Galaxy’s last match paled in comparison to what he had experienced when playing in England.  "I’ve had a lot more boos before in games," he said, quoted by the Times.

Media reports on July19, however, indicate that there could a light at the end of the tunnel for Beckham, England, and South Africa after all.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea and Tottenham are preparing to present Beckham a proposal which will offer the player "an escape route from the United States" and bring him back to England, and keep his dreams alive for next year’s World Cup.

Reportedly, Chelsea manager and former AC Milan manager, Carlo Ancelotti "is a fan of Beckham; moreover, he knows from personal experience what Beckham is capable of since it was Ancelotti himself who signed him on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy last season.

"Beckham and his wife, Victoria, have already been looking at schools in London for their three sons," the Daily Mail said on July 19.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have also "indicated" a desire to land Beckham at White Hart Lane.

"Harry Redknapp has always been a great admirer of David, as a player and as a person, and particularly of the way he has won back his place in the England squad. If he wanted to return to the Premier League, the club would definitely take him."

rinku, seriously dude. I was watching the WPSL and you know how they are loaded with women from england, china and brazil? Well the commentators were talking about how the coach was being difficult letting the two English girls go back to England to play for their country for an international match. I'm like... wow?

Anonymous rinku Tue, Jul 21 2009 21:45 CET

i really hope he goes to chelsea!!btw i dont think the coaches and players in the mls understand the importance of playing for your own country. just leave beckham alone.

Let's be real, the MLS is not the best place for him if he wants to be involved in the England team. As for the jeering fans and criticism from team mates, like he said himself, he has been involved with the best teams and players in the world and his professionalism has never been in doubt. So, for that to be happening at this level is laughable. He is a valuable MEMBER of the TEAM, on and OFF the pitch!

lastly, Beckham loves LA and his teammates of the Galaxy. But you have to understand that He loves his country more. England was what created him and he has debts that he has to owe to them. The manager of England will not play him unless he is playing football at the highest level. Not playing at a lower level in africa, america, mexico, or canada. Yes they are all great leagues, but when it comes to fitness and performances week in and out, you have to challenge yourself. The world cup only happens every four years, and this will [...]

Read the full comment probably be Becks last world cup. So lay off his back and let him accomplish his mission to play for his country one last time. Than he is here to stay with the Galaxy, I guarantee you. Yes he will be old, but he will still be a very very wise soccer player.

Individuals help win games. Look at Sundays game VS AC MILAN. Take away lovely Becks and you take away two goals.
Now you add more skilled players and you have yourself a good team. Already you have Donovan and Beckham combining, therefore creating magic. Imagine if they had a keeper... and a defender... Then you can begin to say hello to that MLS Trophy and Champions League. But with just Becks, dont dream too hard yet.

if Beckham was good L.A would have won the championship you say? Oh please. You must not know anything about soccer. Soccer is a team sport my friend. It is team work. I play for my college and on one of our shirts there is a quote that says ''Individuals help win games, but Team work helps win championships.'' I dont care how good you are, one player cannot carry the weight of a team. Ronaldo for example (MAN UTD) Did not win the title for Manchester United by himself. Yes he did do a great deal of damage scoring [...]

Read the full comment nearly half of their goals. But the other players that YOU dont notice because YOU lack the knowledge of soccer help allow Ronaldo to SHINE. Carrick, Fletcher, Evra do a lot of dirty work, but people dont notice them. Without a great midfield, MAN UTD champnionship can be kissed away. Alex Ferguson understands this, and he knows that by selling Ronaldo it will not cost them the League next year (but it may be more difficult). because SOCCER/Football is TEAM WORK/TACTICS,Strategy/ AND lastly Skill

Premiership champions?

The season in the English Premiership is just around the corner – at last. This inevitably means that many wives and girlfriends will be relegated to second best within any given relationship, but what is likely to be even more disappointing to anyone and everyone who does not support Manchester United, is the equally alarming prospect of them winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.
