Rhodopes get new panoramic viewing platform

On a clear day you see the Rhodopes, forever. And now, even better, after the installation of a special viewing platform that offers stunning views of the mountain region.

Built on Mount St Iliya near Yagodina village by a local tourism company, the spot is reachable only by 4x4, which adds to the adrenaline, a representative of the company told Bulgarian National Television.

The platform is on the edge of a cliff 1563m above sea level, and the perpendicular drop from the platform is more than 600m.

The tourism company’s Sergei Genchev said the site had a panoramic view of two-thirds of Buynovskoto Gorge.

Further in the distance, visitors can see the mountains of Greece and parts of Pirin and small peak in the Rila range.

The structure, made of concrete and steel, was mounted in the rocks and can hold three tons.

"Naturally, it is made so that there is no danger to tourists," Genchev said.

However, visitors will not be allowed to visit the site in bad weather because the area is known for violent thunderstorms.

It was no accident that the peak was known by the name of the patron saint of thunder, St Iliya, BNT said.

READING ROOM: Easter in the Rhodopes' largest monastery

The distance between Sofia and the Rhodope mountain town of Assenovgrad is 150km. Only 10km further into the mountain is nestled Bachkovski manastir (Bachkovo Monastery) - the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria and certainly the largest in the Rhodope Mountains. The Rhodopes start when you enter the hilly Assenovgrad. Further on, the route passes by Assenova krepost (Assen's Fortress),

Six weeks in the Rhodopes: a village experience

In the summer of 2005, my husband and I lived in Polkovnik Serafimovo, a tiny Rhodope mountain village about seven km south-east of Smolyan and named after Vladimir Serafimov, a colonel who saved the region from a Turkish attack during the Balkan Wars of the early 20th century. We stayed in this village for six weeks as recipients of artist residencies through the co-operation of two men, Lyubomir Levchev and Hughes

In the realm of Orpheus

I have just returned from a hiking holiday in the Rhodopes, the mountains of Orpheus. This extensive mountain range has a beauty and mystery, much of which comes from its remoteness and grandeur, and the myths that are very much a part of its history. It was one of the best holidays I have had, with all aspects joining forces to bring about a rare sort of perfection.
