Order, Law and Justice (OLJ) party's priorities in the 41st National Assembly would be calling a Grand National Assembly that will introduce changes to the constitution such as bringing the number of current (240) MPs down to 120, OLJ leader Yane Yanev said on July 14 2009, the first day of the new Parliament's work.

"At the elections Bulgarians demanded a general change by voting for Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov's party GERB," he said.

"We sincerely congratulate Borissov on his party's exceptional elections result and we hope that GERB will justify this trust," Yanev noted.

"The OLJ will support a Cabinet of Boiko Borissov with only one hope - that it will bring about a radical and general change," he said.

Bulgarian needed a new constitution in order to break the ties with its communist past, Yanev noted.

Other than bringing down the number of MPs, the new constitution had to seek radical reforms in the judiciary and in the way Parliament exercised control over the executive branch of power. "Governments should be elected based on concrete programmes, obligations and a specific timeframe. If they fail to achieve it, they should step down," Yanev said.

Cabinet ministers should also be subject to no confidence motions, he said.

Yanev’s Order Law and Justice party will not sign GERB’s memorandum

Yane Yanev says his party will support Boiko Borissov’s government for six months, but is withdrawing from a meeting with GERB planned for July 20 2009. Yanev’s party is refusing to sign GERB’s proposed memorandum of support for the new government, which Yanev says is ‘not a European document’.
