Former Velingrad mayor handed prison sentence

Sofia City Court (SCC) sentenced former Velingrad mayor and former member of Parliament Fidel Beev to three years and six months in prison on two accounts of crimes in office, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Beev was found guilty of signing unfavourable contracts for the delivery of fuel and other materials to municipal kindergartens while in office as Velingrad mayor, causing around 16 000 leva worth of damages. The SCC convicted him to two years in prison on this account, BTA said.

Beev was also found guilty of not complying with the Law on Public Orders. According to the prosecution, Beev had personally profited from the deals.

For this account, Beev was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

In keeping with the law, Beev will have to serve the longer of the two sentences; three years and six months' imprisonment.

The prosecutor had demanded five years' imprisonment.

Additionally, he will have to pay a civil claim of 16 000 leva to the municipality of Velingrad.

An appeal aginst the decision of the SCC can be lodged with Sofia Appellative Court.
