On July 13, the Sofia City Prosecutor demanded a five-year prison sentence for former Velingrad mayor Fidel Beev.

Beev is on trial at the Sofia City Court accused of abusing power by signing contracts for the supply of fuel and other materials to municipal kindergartens, with damages estimated at around 16 000 leva, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor Roman Vasilev asked the court to bar Beev from public positions for three years.

Beev's defence, however, said no contracts for delivery of fuels had been signed while Beev was mayor of Velingrad.

Evidence presented to the court showed that 23 payments made during the period when Beev was mayor, did not mention Beev.

The defence asked for Beev's release, BTA said.

Sofia City Court was expected to present its ruling on July 14.
