More than 250 breaches of law that cost taxpayers eight million leva are detailed in a report that followed a probe into the activity of a Defence Ministry agency over the period of two years, carried out by the Public Financial Inspection Agency and quoted by Bulgarian-language media on July 12.
The report targeted the agency overseeing social activities of the ministry and was ordered after the agency's head Stoyan Stoyanov was sacked in February 2009, covering the period 2006/08.
The alleged irregularities range from repairs of military clubs and the activity of military cultural institutes to the construction of the National Army Complex, Focus news agency reported.
The report has already been submitted to prosecutors and the Defence Ministry, but it was not immediately clear whether any criminal investigation would follow.
Stoyanov rejected any claims of wrondoing. "It is a personal war that [Defence Minister Nikolai] Tsonev has been waging against me for more than a year. I still have no explanation what caused this, but I must categorically say that the latest accusations against me are not true," he told Focus.
"I am not worried that about anything coming out of this manufactured report. Allegations in spring were investigated by the Military Prosecution and nothing was confirmed. The pre-trial investigation against me was ended," he was quoted as saying.
Tsonev, for his part, rejected the accusation of personal bias. "For 14 months that I have been minister, I have not said a bad thing about anyone. This report is based on our study carried out when we abolished the [social activities] agency, who carried out their own investigation," Tsonev told Focus.
Seven arrested, including ‘The Squirrel’ who was found in possession of 10 00 euro, Interior Ministry says. Mobile phones, computer equipment and drug paraphernalia seized.
The first tremor was at about 12.34am, followed by another three minutes later. Their epicentres were located between the towns of Radnevo and Topolovgrad.
